Mastering the Maneuverability Exercise

Mastering the maneuverability test is often the most nerve-wracking part of getting your driver’s license. At Drive Team, we’ve seen thousands of students tackle these cones, and the secret isn’t just about how you turn the wheel—it’s about how you use your mirrors.

This exercise is designed to test your spatial awareness and vehicle control. Here is our step-by-step guide to clearing the course with confidence.

The Setup

The course consists of five cones: two at the start (9 feet apart), one in the center 20 feet ahead, and two more 20 feet beyond that. Before you start, remember the golden rule: Don’t oversteer. Small, controlled movements are your best friend here.

 

Phase 1: Driving Forward

  1. The Approach: Pull up to the first two cones. The examiner will tell you which side of the center cone to aim for.
  2. The First Turn: Roll forward. When your side mirrors are even with the first two cones, turn the steering wheel in the direction you were instructed. This shouldn’t be much more than a half-turn.
  3. Clearing the Center: Once it looks like your vehicle will clear that center cone, straighten the steering wheel.
  4. The “S” Turn: When your side mirror is even with the center cone, turn the wheel back toward it.
  5. The Stop: When the back tires clear the center cone, straighten the wheel and continue forward until the vehicle is straight and the rear bumper is parallel with the center cone, then stop.

Phase 2: Backing Up

This is where your mirror skills really come into play. 

  • Shift to Reverse: Put the vehicle in reverse and turn the steering wheel toward the center cone.
  • Check Your Mirrors: If you are on the right side of the center cone, look in the right (passenger) side mirror. If you are on the left side, look in the left (driver) side mirror.
  • Find the Gap: Begin backing and look for the top cone to appear in the side mirror with a little space between the cone and your tire.
  • Straighten and Clear: Straighten the wheel and continue backing. When your rear tire can clear the top cone, turn the steering wheel toward that cone.
  • The Finish: Continue backing, using your mirrors until you are even between the cones on both sides, then straighten the steering wheel. Stop once your front bumper is even with the first two cones to complete the exercise.

  • Mirror Awareness: These instructions depend entirely on your ability to use your mirrors effectively.
  • Take a Breath: If you need to, stop and re-acclimate to your surroundings before continuing.
  • Slow is Smooth: Avoid oversteering and keep your movements steady.
